A multidisciplinary approach to the study of the fluminense vegetation Anais da ABC (AABC)
KELECOM,ALPHONSE; REIS,GEISA L.; FEVEREIRO,PAULO C.A.; SILVA,JANIE G.; SANTOS,MARCELO G.; MELLO NETO,CÍCERO B.; GONZALEZ,MARCELO S.; GOUVEA,RITA C.S.; ALMEIDA,GILBERTO S.S..
The fluminense vegetation, more specifically the flora from the Jurubatiba restinga has been investigated by a multidisciplinary team of botanists, chemist, radiobiologist, insect physiologists and geneticist. Vouchers of 564 specimens have been collected, identified, organized in an herbarium, and a database is being build up containing, in addition to classical botanical data, chemical data and information on the potential economic use either for landscape gardening, alternative foods or as medicinal plants. Phytochemical studies of the Guttiferae, Clusia hilariana, yielded oleanolic acid and nemorosone. Their biological activities against the haematophagous insect Rhodnius prolixus vector of Chagas disease have been investigated. Finally, it has been...

Age-related biological activity of South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus) venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Furtado,M. F. D.; Santos,M. C.; Kamiguti,A. S..
An in vitro and in vivo comparative study was performed on the effects of Crotalus durissus terrificus venoms from a mother and its 15 newborns. The venoms were tested for protein content, lethality, proteolytic, myotoxic, hemorrhagic, and phospholipase A2 activity. The minimum coagulant dose in plasma and human fibrinogen, protrhombin, and Factor II activations were analyzed. The venoms were also analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). This showed that despite similar total protein content, the biological effects of the venoms were different. Venom from young snakes exhibited higher enzymatic and coagulant activities and higher myotoxicity compared to the mother’s. In addition, the PLA2 content paralleled myotoxicity. However, no difference...

Antiophidian properties of plant extracts against Lachesis muta venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
De Paula,RC; Sanchez,EF; Costa,TR; Martins,CHG; Pereira,PS; Lourenço,MV; Soares,AM; Fuly,AL.
Snakebites comprise a serious health problem in several countries due to their global incidence, which exceeds 2.5 million per year, and the elevated number of victim fatalities. To counteract envenomations, antivenoms have been used regularly for more than a century. Apart from side effects including anaphylactic reactions, antivenoms are not able to efficiently neutralize local tissue damage, which contributes to increasing the severity and morbidity observed in patients. This fact, in turn, may be responsible for economic hardship, particularly in rural populations of developing countries. In the present work, we evaluated the antiophidian properties of 12 Brazilian plant extracts against the hemolytic, coagulant, hemorrhagic and proteolytic effects of...

Development and evaluation of an inhalation chamber for in vivo tests Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,EDUARDO R. DA; BIZZO,HUMBERTO R.; FERNANDES,PATRÍCIA D.; VEIGA JUNIOR,VALDIR F. DA; LEITÃO,SUZANA G.; OLIVEIRA,DANILO R. DE.
ABSTRACT The bioavailability, toxicity, and therapeutic efficacy of a drug is directly related to its administration route. The pulmonary route can be accessed by inhalation after fumigation, vaporization or nebulization. Thus, pharmacological and toxicological evaluation accessed by an apparatus specifically designed and validated for this type of administration is extremely important. Based on pre-existing models, an inhalation chamber was developed. This presents a central structure with five animal holders. The nebulized air passes directly and continuously through these holders and subsequently to an outlet. Evaluation of its operation was performed using clove essential oil, a nebulizer, and a flow meter. The air within the chamber was collected by...

EFFECT OF LIQUID COW MANURE ON CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL PROPERTIES IN AN ANDISOL R.C. Suelo Nutr. Veg.
Aguilera,Paula; Briceño,Gabriela; Mora,María de la Luz; Demanet,Rolando; Palma,Graciela.
The aim of this work was to establish the effect of the dose of liquid cow manure (LCM) on some chemical properties and biological activity in an Andisol. This study was carried out under laboratory conditions using an Andisol and LCM from a dairy farm located in the South of Chile. The dose of LCM were the equivalent to 0 (SO), 100 (S100), 200, (S200) and 300 (S300) thousand L ha-1. This amount is equivalent to regular agronomic LCM applications. The chemical characterization indicated that the LCM addition modified all the tested Andisol chemical properties. These begin to return to the initial conditions from 10 days on, with the exception of EC, K and DOC. The C-C0(2) evolution indicated that LCM incorporation at increasing dose enhanced the...

General characterization of venom from the Moroccan snakes Macrovipera mauritanica and Cerastes cerastes J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Oukkache,N; Lalaoui,M; Ghalim,N.
Ophidian envenomation accidents constitute a serious public health problem in many countries around the globe. Over 5 million such accident cases occur each year causing more than 100,000 deaths. In Africa, more than 20,000 deaths per year are registered while 400,000 envenomation victims retain severe and permanent functional sequelae. In Morocco, snakebites are frequent and of greater severity in children. They occur mostly in rural areas. The incidence of these bites remains poorly understood and vastly underestimated. The epidemiological data are not well known due to the absence of a national registry, whereas a significant proportion of envenomations receive only traditional treatment methods in non-medical intensive care. This prompted us to...

Villa-Ruano,Nemesio; Pacheco-Hernández,Yesenia; Lozoya-Gloria,Edmundo; Rubio-Rosas,Efraín; Ruiz-González,Nancy; Martínez-Orea,Yuriana; Cruz-Duran,Ramiro; Ramirez-Garcia,S. Alberto; Ramón-Canúl,L. Guadalupe.
Zaluzania montagnifolia, an antidiabetic and abortive shrub 1 to 3 m high, grows actively in xeric scrublands in some states of México. Zulazanins and some flavonoids are the foremost constituents of the polar extracts in this species; however, there is no available information about the lipophilic compounds from non-polar extracts. The objective of this study was to describe the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) profile of hexanic preparations, exclusivelly with dissolve lipophilic molecules, in order to sustain the empirical uses and the new biological activities reported in this study for the plant. These preparations were obtained from flowers, leaves and roots of Z. montagnifolia which were collected in Oaxaca, México, in October 2011. In...

Principaux taxons ligneux de la cosmétopée tropicale : une analyse bibliographique ArchiMer
Ansel, Jean-luc; Butaud, Jean-francois; Raharivelomanana, Phila.
"Cosmetopoiea" refers to popular uses of plants for traditional cosmetic and body care that have always existed in many countries and cultures over the world since centuries, but this concept is still very poorly documented under the form of written reports. We report herein on a first assessment on cosmetopoiea from tropical regions, which consists in reviewing the available literature data (related to ethnobotany and pharmacopoeia) in order to highlight the tropical trees and the taxa mostly used in traditional cosmetic or dermatology and, for some of them, treated as examples, to describe briefly their chemical composition and biological activities.

Secondary metabolites from marine microorganisms Anais da ABC (AABC)
KELECOM,ALPHONSE.
After 40 years of intensive research, chemistry of marine natural products has become a mature field. Since 1995, there are signals of decreased interest in the search of new metabolites from traditional sources such as macroalgae and octocorals, and the number of annual reports on marine sponges stabilized. On the contrary, metabolites from microorganisms is a rapidly growing field, due, at least in part, to the suspicion that a number of metabolites obtained from algae and invertebrates may be produced by associated microorganisms. Studies are concerned with bacteria and fungi, isolated from seawater, sediments, algae, fish and mainly from marine invertebrates such as sponges, mollusks, tunicates, coelenterates and crustaceans. Although it is still to...

Boudjelal,Farida; Zitouni,Abdelghani; Mathieu,Florence; Lebrihi,Ahmed; Sabaou,Nasserdine.
A moderately halophilic actinomycete strain designated AH97 was isolated from a saline Saharan soil, and selected for its antimicrobial activities against bacteria and fungi. The AH97 strain was identified by morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic analyses to the genus Actinoalloteichus. Analysis of the 16S rDNA sequence of strain AH97 showed a similarity level ranging between 95.8% and 98.4% within Actinoalloteichus species, with A. hymeniacidonis the most closely related. The comparison of the physiological characteristics of AH97 with those of known species of Actinoalloteichus showed significant differences. Strain AH97 showed an antibacterial and antifungal activity against broad spectrum of microorganisms known to be human and plant...
